Why you need a soft starter
With direct-on-line starting, a motor draws a current several times higher than its rated value. The result is voltage drops in the supply network, jerks in the mechanics and accelerated wear of components. A soft starter gradually raises the voltage applied to the motor windings, so shaft torque builds up evenly and the starting current is significantly reduced.

Also consider the load type, starting frequency and operating conditions. For heavy starts (shredders, pellet mills) it is better to allow a power reserve and a longer ramp-up time, while for fans and pumps standard settings are usually enough.
